The first real test for the new championship - and it fell through, like the worst days of fuel saving in Group C or Formula 1. Johnny Cecotto jumped the start (and got 20 seconds penalty for this), but Grohs (Porsche) took the lead followed by Nissen (BMW) though soon Hahne (Honda) sailed past the two of them. This trio put some distance between them and von Gartzen, and then the fuel starvation set in. First Schnitt came to rest, the five others followed while the leaders drove as slow as they dared to the line.
