Watts and his Mazda were the surprise polesitters; he shared the Yokohama front row with Winkelhock, with Leslie and Soper on row two. But Watts made a mess of his start and was beaten by Winkelhock. In an effort to save second he bumped into Soper, went off and hit the armco. Exit Watts, but behind him there was more drama: it all happened very fast, but it seemed Bailey punted Odor into Allam who spun and collided head-on with Neal. The latter was out just like Allam, Odor and Bellm - Neal and Odor more often than not part of the mayhem at any track it seemed.
The race was redflagged and restarted with 21 cars instead of 26 and it was Winkelhock leading Soper, Cleland, Leslie, Bailey and Hoy. This status quo remained for a few laps, then Leslie lost his temper and nudged Cleland off, who spun out and rejoined dead last - in the end he would finish tenth. Leslie’s action allowed Bailey and Hoy to slip by, while up front Soper pressured Winkelhock into an error: the German missed a gear (the BMWs still having a H-pattern gearbox while the front wheel drive competition had sequential gearboxes) and Soper took the lead. More troubles for Jo when he spun on oil, dropping him down to fifth. The fight for second wasn’t settled, Leslie fighting with the Toyotas. When Leslie became third behind Bailey and ahead of Hoy, that was the order in which they finished.
