The new season promised much. Although the BMW teams of Prodrive and Vic Lee did not take part anymore because of different reasons, from Germany the Schnitzer team took over; left in the cold by the DTM they entered Jo Winkelhock and Steve Soper in Britain. Another new team was GB Motorsport forming the Renault dealer team with the little 19. Ford was missing this first round, but a Toyota junior team, a Xedos 6 for Patrick Watts and a number of privateers rounded off the entry. Practice saw Soper taking pole, but more significant: the first 14 cars were within 1 second, barely half a second split the first seven.
After the star, Soper took the lead followed by Winkelhock, with Cleland and Odor close behind. The Nissan challenge took a blow when Percy was punted off the track and Odor was T-boned by O’Brien. More damage at the rear of the grid: Verdon-Roe stalled his car and Portman slammed into it.
No team orders at BMW it seemed, since Winkelhock outbraked Soper and took the lead. Slowly, the BMWs built up a lead over Cleland who had no threat from behind. Soper passed Winkelhock in lap 11, and kept his lead to the end, with Winkelhock second and Cleland third. Behind him, Hoy and Allam had a fight of their own with Watts sixth in the Xedos. Top privateer was Neal in the BMW.
