The second time the BTCC field presented itself to the GP audience the weather was much better.
A new Japanese engine in the front of the Janspeed Nissan propelled Odor to pole, and fellow Yokohama pilot Hoy claimed second spot - a full Japanese front row. They were followed by Dunlop’s Leslie and Michelin’s Radisich.
The start was a bit messy and several drivers missed the green light, amongst them Rouse, Cleland and Needell. Hoy got away best and led Odor, Bailey, Soper, Radisich, Leslie, Watts and Percy. The top-7 train continued so for a few laps, with Bailey and Watts gaining a position. The Toyota 1-2 looked fine, but disaster struck: Hoy ran a little wide, Bailey thought Hoy made room for him; he tapped Hoy, who was on two wheels now - and then was on his roof. A riuned tire ended the race for Bailey as well, and on the same lap we lost Harvey and Portman too who ran in the gravel. When Watts’ engine expired he retired too.
Odor found himself in the lead but Soper was close behind and they were followed by Radisich, Leslie, Winkelhock and Percy. The fight between Odor and Soper was intense, but clean. Alas, Soper’s wheel-locking manoeuvres had put too much stress on the right front tire and he went off. Odor cruised to the line with second-placed Percy making it a 1-2 for Nissan! Another happy face on the podium was New-Zealander Radisich, third in the Mondeo despite worn tires.
