Pembrey marked the return of Ford to the BTCC, if we forget the troublesome efforts for the Sapphire in the last few years. After much testing, the front wheel drive configuration of the new Mondeo, joined by an engine from the American Probe came out best; the rear-wheel drive version suffered from transmission losses.
Good fortune was again not really spread out over the competitors; Jo Winkelhock had a fair share of it, Leslie didn’t. After the Scot setting pole nearly 1,3 seconds faster than last year it was again a surprise to find Winkelhock (from 6th on the grid!) leading the pack after the start. Leslie used a tiny error of the German to get ahead, and behind them many cars were trading paint. Rouse managed third after removing the rear bumper of Cleland, while Leslie got some distance between him and Jo. The Renaults had a coming together and ended in the grass, Harvey’s radiators full of grass ending in an overheated engine. Rouse enjoyed third for a while, before he pushed and shoved down the field, ending with a bump from Odor, a fresh set of tires and a broken suspension.
Lap 13, and Leslie’s fortune was over too when his throttle cable snapped. Winkelhock brought his BMW to the line first, behind him there still fights but it was Hoy in second and Soper third. Nuttall had been in the fight for third too, but an exploding fire extinguisher when flat out in sixth gear brought this fight to an end, though sixth on the line was still a surprise.
