Peter Kox was back in Zandvoort, and most of the 7.500 spectators would not forget this; he had taken over Mario Merten’s Carly BMW, and after one lap he hit the armco on the straight first on the right, crossed the track and slammed into the rails in front of the grandstand. A missed gear was the reason for all of this.
He switched to a second Carly car (van Krimpen’s) and was able to make the restart albeit on the last row. With Lotus doing the winning again (Langeberg ahead of van Vliet) he still managed fifth, behind Ron Langeberg and van Dedem, who was in his Evo 2 Mercedes for the first time. The 4-wheel drive Alfa Romeo 155s were not up to speed yet.
The two-liter race called for intelligence on the tire front; Euser and Bosch gambled on slicks (which was the right choice), Happé had intermediates and van Reenen had hand-cut slicks. Happé was best away and took the lead but soon Euser took over, while the Mitsubishi driver lost third gear. Bosch managed to pass van Reenen for second, while Ciapponi and Huisman had a tough battle - after a brake test by Huisman, Ciapponi still managed to pull out of the slipstream at the finish line in time to get fourth place.
Suzuki still had the upper hand in the 1400 cc class, Top winning over Kerseboom once again, with Alex Post third. The importer cars of Oeberius Kapteyn and van de Haterd disappointed, O.K. complaining of a down on power engine while van de Haterd broke his gearbox.
