Toyota’s dismal Silverstone weekend took a turn for the better when Bailey planted his car on pole and took a win in race 2. Watts was on the front row too with his Xedos and local hero Cleland was third. It all seemed to drift away from BMW, the early season pacesetters, who were 6th and 9th on the grid, while Renault skipped the round altogether, to do some development on the little car.
The unavoidable startline accident took out Percy, while Verdon-Roe and Khan could take the restart thanks to tank tape. The second start was better with Watts leading over Bailey, Cleland and Soper while Hoy was forced into a spin. Cleland took Bailey and now Watts was beginning to understeer badly, so in lap 10 Cleland went by. Soper and Radisich had a grim fight, resulting in a spin by Soper. Bailey went by Watts too, and Winkelhock took over where Soper had left: he tapped the Mondeo but Radisich kept it on the road - but in lap 15 he had to let the German go, who passed Watts a while later. The final order was Cleland, Bailey, Winkelhock, Watts and Radisich.
Winkelhock had disputed the last three laps without clutch so was unable to take the start of race 2. Cleland had the best start, Bailey fended off Watts on fresh tires and they were followed by Allam, Radisich and Hoy who rose to the occasion. He soon took fifth, passed Allam for fourth while Bailey closed the gap on Cleland again. In a breathtaking manoeuvre, he passed Cleland at Duffus. Hoy got by Watts, and that was the final order: Bailey, Cleland, Hoy, Watts and Radisich who had taken Allam.
