Mansell mania at Donington; the 1993 Indy car champion tried his hands on touring car racing, with the car to have in 1993: the Mondeo. “Red 5” had an off on Friday after just 2 laps, and he ended in the gravel trap in the afternoon. His car wasn’t great after that, so after teammate Radisich had claimed provisional pole (though he had to start from the back of the reverse grid) Mansell took over and was fifth fastest.
He and 60.000 Mansell maniacs looked forward to the race, and after 25 laps he was third, ahead of Soper and Needell. But then he was too fast at Old Hairpin, went sideways at 200 kmh, tangled with Needell’s Vauxhall and slammed sideways in the concrete bridge wall. He lost consciousness but after a night at the hospital he could go home again.
The race was restarted and in the end Leslie (Vauxhall) won after Soper and Radisich had collided.
