After the soaked Grand Prix, masterfully won by Senna, it was time for the tin-tops to go ahead in the pouring rain. Soper was on pole, but rear wheel drive was not what was needed in these conditions: front wheel drive and Michelin tires, and only Peugeot Talbot Sport and the Renault team could provide this.
Visibility was poor, and on the warm up lap Watts had to take avoiding action into the marker boards for a twitching Odor, whiley Bailey went into the pits with a misted windshield.
From a giant tidal wave of spray, the field mystically took Redgate corner nearly complete - there was only one car missing, Tiff Needell who seemed to have made contact with Cantwell - Tiff ended in the gravel trap. Soper was in front and was the only one with some visibility, while Watts spun out because of an anonymous bump. This caused further problems for Verdon-Roe and Neal who were out and Hoy who lost power and sailed off. O’Brien damaged his distributor with some rallyecrossing, and up front Winkelhock’s engine suddenly died. The order was now Soper, Cleland, Odor, Percy, Menu, Harvey and Gravett. While Harvey was on the move, Menu left the track and rejoined in eight spot. Harvey passed the Nissans and went for Cleland and passed him on lap 8. Two laps later it was Soper’s turn and the small yellow Renault led its first race. Menu went to the front again and was helped to second when Soper missed a gear. More damage was done Gravett went off, Andersson and Leslie collided while Bellm and Percy ended their race in the gravel at the Old Hairpin.
Harvet crossed he line first, Menu was second and Soper finished third.

Ford had been testing here but found themselves 5 seconds off the pace.
