Radisich put the Mondeo on pole, which seemed inevitable considering the car’s development the last few months, and the front row was shared by teammate Rouse with Winkelhock on P3. A surprise was Menu on P5, the Swiss having a fine season despite a mediocre car.
Right before the start, the heavens opened and the field switched to wets, with three laps extra to get used to the conditions - which was too much for poor Khan, who rolled his car and was unable to start race 1 (he did start in race 2 surprisingly).
Rouse started ahead of Radisich, but the latter pushed his way through to lead while Hoy and Soper collided, both had damaged their tires. Menu on the other hand kept his cool and found himself third, close to Rouse. He occupied second when both he and Rouse missed the first chicane altogether, the Renault quickly rejoining. Leslie was third after that eventful lap, followed by Winkelhock, Cleland, Bailey, Rouse, O’Brien, Gravett and Harvey, the latter climbing thorough the field. Radisich opened a gap which lasted to the flag, with Menu second by quite some margin. Harvey had made up ground to finish third, closely followed by Leslie on the now drying track.
The track was still drying for race 2, but would it rain again? Most opted for intermediates, some for wets (like Winkelhock), others gambled on slicks (Bailey, Hoy and Odor). Radisich took the lead, but Menu passed him, and then Radisich was in the lead again. Soper’s hand-cut slicks promoted him to 12th on lap 1, and when heavy drizzle started, Bailey, Odor and Kaye all spun on their slicks, while Hoy pitted for wets.
On lap 8, the race decision was made when Radisich got out of shape and Menu went by. Despite full pressure the Swiss went on to win, with Radisich second after he dismissed an opportunity when he pushed Menu wide. A real gentleman! Third was Winkelhock, valuable points for him, ahead of Rouse and Soper. Ninth overall and winner of the privateer class was Ashley, with Neal second and third was for Khan in his battered car.
