A pole for the Dunlop-shod Cavalier of Leslie with Hoy second on the grid and the first BMW in fourth: that wasn’t expected at this track. But another demon start for Winkelhock (sixth on the grid!) brought him second behind Hoy at the first corner, while Leslie dropped back but soon regained second, and when Hoy ran wide on the exit of Surtees he lost six places. In he meantime we had lost Cleland and Khan, while Leslie was leading Winkelhock, Soper, Odor and Percy. Odor slipped past Soper and Winkelhock increased pressure on Leslie up to the point that he touched the rear of the Ecosse Cavalier at Clearways. Leslie spun, Winkelhock got a fine afterwards but won the race. Odor finished second, Hoy third and Soper fourth, while Leslie was furious.
For race 2, Winkelhock started from pole and led with Soper, Hoy, Odor and Percy. Winkelhock made a big effort in lap 2 (which turned out joint fastest of the race) but in lap 3 he fished for gears and went off. Soper was leading now, but Hoy put the pressure on while from behind both Cleland and Leslie stormed through the field. When Hoy’s car started a misfire he dropped back and even left the road, rejoining about last. Now Odor took over the role of the pursuer, and was very close indeed until his engine expired on the last lap and he coasted over the line, still in second behind Soper but ahead of Allam.
In the privateer cup, Team Dynamics won both heats with Bellm, but in heat two Portman and Neal collided, retiring both of them ultimately.
