18 cars within a second on the grid: the Indy circuit seemed to be tailor-made for the BTCC 1993. Third pole for Leslie, who still was awaiting his first BTCC win, with Radisich second in the Mondeo with Winkelhock third. That CC racing was starting to lose its hold on the BTCC was illustrated by the 17th and 21st spot for Cleland and Allam on the grid, though Yokohama wasn’t looking good here either.
The track had been soaked in the morning, but the race was dry. Radisich powered the Mondeo in front, blocking Winkelhock’s normally demon start in the process. Winkelhock, third, tapped Leslie in the back and sending him in a wide slide, which cost the Scot some places. After lap 2, it was still Radisich still eading, with Winkelhock closing but the German felt pressure from behind: first Soper, then Rouse, Leslie and Gravett. Rouse tangled with Winkelhock, Leslie slipped past the first and was third now. Leslie now set for Winkelhock but tapped him as well, sending him into a spin. Both cars were delayed, and now Rouse was second. Instead of protecting the New Zealander, Rouse closed right up. But Radisich’s problems worsened when Gravett appeared in his mirrors; he had passed Rouse in a neat way for a change. The same sort of gap was used by Soper two corners later, so Rouse slipped down to fourth. Winkelhock in the mean time had climbed back from 19th to 7th, setting fastest lap in the process, but then a tire let go and he was out. Soper claimed second in lap 32, but lost it again after the race when the action was declared as unfair. But Ford’s 200th BTCC victory was in the bag with a delighted Radisich claiming his maiden win.
