Since Saturday was washed out, only Friday practice could be used for serious qualifying. Not that Cleland mattered, since he was fastest on Friday. Rouse shared the front row, but both Allam and Hoy were unusually far behind in sixth and seventh. Cleland took the lead after the start, followed by Rouse, Verdon-Roe, Allam, Harvey and Leslie. Rouse’s race was over in lap 2, when his engine expired; meanwhile Allam passed Verdon-Roe for what now was second. Hoy sliced through the field and was soon battling with Harvey for third. He soon dealt with the BMW and then set off for Allam, but the latter succeeded in passing Cleland, who was holding them up. Meanwhile, Leslie had repassed Harvey, with Menu and privateer Kaye joining the frame, but the young Swiss BMW driver threw it all away with a spin. Hoy was now all over Cleland, and an intense battle followed though finally Hoy was second and that was the way they finished behind Allam, with Harvey fourth and Kaye an excellent fifth. |
