It was a long time ago that a British Saloon championship visited Scotland, but here they are. The Knockhill track welcomed them with lots of rain, and the Scottish Ecosse team dominated wet practice and got the front row. They were followed by yet another Cavalier of Allam, and Soper and Harvey were fourth and fifth, still complaining of a heavy car even after shedding 25 kg. From ninth would have started Menu, but in an accident on a quad bike in the paddock he broke his leg badly and was out for the rest of the season. A new face was Colin McRae, the Rallye champ finding his way in a Prodrive BMW.
A brief period of dry weather saw the field starting on a dry track, and it was Leslie who led, with Verdon-Roe, Soper, Allam and the rest. Soper pushed Verdon-Roe wide, and the latter lost some ground, while Soper lost his second place soon to Allam, who set off for Leslie who he passed a little later - and in lap seven, Allam took the lead from Leslie. Harvey passed Soper for third, and while Odor and Vernon-Roe collided it became apparent that Cleland’s rear bumper started to come off. He was signalled to come in to have it removed, but John went on and was subsequently disqualified. Harvey took Leslie for second, and when Leslie tried to regain his place he spun and got a puncture. Allam won the race ahead of Harvey with Rouse third.
With Cleland still furious and having to start from the pit lane the field got away again and it was Leslie who went straight on in the first corner, slammed into the tire wall and overturned. The race was redflagged and while Leslie’s car was recovered the heavens opened once again. Harvey had the best start and when Bellm was passed by Allam the first two positions were settled. Soper had a big moment and lost time, and Cleland was on the move, finally finishing an excellent third.
