The first double-header of the year was in Donington. With his rebuilt car, Hoy only needed 11 laps to get pole while nobody else had less than 20 laps. The BMWs were getting better now, with Soper second and Harvey third on the grid.
A clean start and it was Hoy in the lead, Menu second after a demon start, and then Soper, Harvey and the rest. But at the end of lap 1 it was all over for the Swiss driver: Verdon-Roe hit him and while Menu was out, Verdon-Roe had intended only “to defend himself from Cleland”. Strong words from a man who yet had to finish a race with his car intact...
Soper dashed for the pits with a misfire, which was cured with a new plug. The order was now Hoy leading two seconds over the Rouse-Cleland-Harvey-Allam train - and it stayed that way to the line with one exception: a spectacular manoeuvre saw Cleland slip by Rouse.
A short repair period followed and then race 2 started, with the two Mobil BMWs starting from the pit lane. That may have been a blessing in disguise, since they missed the mass collision caused by Gravett, whose start had been too good to be true; he collided with Rouse, Bellm and Allam: only Bellm survived more or less, the rest retired on the spot. Cleland was in the lead, but Harvey, Leslie and Hoy challenged him and the lead changed a few times. Hoy came out on top, only to be challenged by Harvey in lap 67. The BMW with its loose exhaust snatched the lead, while Vic Lee tried to persuade the officials not to black flag Harvey. They didn’t, and Harvey had the first win for the BMW coupé with Hoy second and Soper third after an inspired drive from the back.
