Once again, qualifying was a lottery with the track drying to the end of the session; while Leslie claimed pole with Rouse second, and the title contenders were further behind: Allam in fourth, Cleland in ninth - but after a heavy testing accident he was lucky to be driving at all though in considerable pain - while Harvey was only 11th and finally Hoy did no better than 17th, his team obviously failing him since teammate Rouse was on the front row.
The track was damp for the race, Leslie, Rouse, Allam and Cleland opting for intermediates, the rest on slicks but Harvey had to use hand-grooved slicks since his mechanics were unable to switch to full slicks on the grid. One of these should have been in front after the start, but it was Sugden on Pirelli slicks who took the lead with Leslie second and Soper third. Drama for Watts and Walker: an accident sidelined the Mazda, while the BMW of Walker had to come in for repairs. Soper went by Leslie, and since Sugden went off in a big way after hitting a wet kerb he found himself in the lead. More excitement as Hoy, now right behind Rouse (!) but the teammates touched again and Hoy spun back to the rear of the field. After lap 1, it was Soper, Leslie, Nissen, Harvey and Allam up front - and it seemed Soper was not driving as fast as he could since he wanted Harvey to catch up. Harvey and Allam went by Nissen, but Leslie and Soper had a big fight which ended in tears when both spun, Leslie dropping back to 6th while Soper rejoined at the tail of the field. Now Harvey was leading ahead of Allam, Nissen, Gravett, Cleland and Leslie until Allam spun and removed Nissen from the front in one go. That was the end of the drama, Harvey winning the race ahead of Soper who had stormed through the field and a delighted Cleland in third with Hoy fourth. Now, Cleland, Harvey and Hoy were only four points apart.
Matt Neals’ race for TOCA cup honours had a severe blow: an accident wrote off his M3, while Kaye finished an excellent fifth overall.
