A dry qualifying for a change, and the BMWs were on top: Soper ahead of Harvey. Julian Bailey had taken over the BMW of the luckless Thyrring, while Middlehurst was replaced by James Weaver in the second Nissan. After the start, it was Soper in the lead, followed by Harvey, Hoy and Rouse. Hoy got the grit between his teeth and passed Harvey, but it didn’t last long; a trick by Soper meant that Harvey retook second, while Rouse lost fourth to Cleland. Soper’s car started smoking but he did not go any slower; he let Harvey past en held up tghe following group a little until he retired in the pits with an oil-less differential. Harvey’s lead was sufficient to bring him first over the line, with Hoy second, Rouse third and Cleland fourth.
In the short break between the races, the Vic Lee mechanics managed to move the differential from the spare car to Soper’s car in record time, though he had to start from the pit lane. Harvey led again, but behind him a pair of Toyotas and a pair of Vauxhalls tried to go for-abreast into Paddock bend. After some fights, the order was Harvey, Cleland, Hoy, Rouse, Nissen and Leslie. A perfect move from Hoy against Cleland brought second for the title holder, but that was as good as it’s got.
All eyes were now on Soper, who climbed to ninth in lap 13 and seventh by lap 20, and then he went by Nissen and Leslie too. But Harvey’s win was sealed and brought him within striking distance from the points leaders: 133 for Cleland, 131 for Hoy, Allam 119 and 118 for Harvey.
