The thirtieth anniversary Bathurst would be the most controversial of them all. After a year of parity adjustments to keep BMW, Ford, Holden and Nissan even, there was already an unsettled atmosphere around the race. Qualifying settled the atmosphere when Dick Johnson produced one of the best Top Ten laps ever seen to give the Sierra a swan song pole position from Larry Perkins (Holden), Mark Skaife (Nissan) and Glenn Seton who was driving the new generation 1993 spec Ford Falcon. Peter Brock snapped a tail shaft on the grid but it was Johnson who exploded away from the grid to lead the race. His lead lasted just short of two laps as Skaife took the lead at the last corner and would not let it go. Mark Gibbs held third until passed by Klaus Niedzwiedz, who in turn was taken by Win Percy and in turn was taken by Anders Olofsson as the international drivers moved forward. Olofsson and Neil Crompton would trade second place with Johnson and John Bowe for much of the race as pit stops evolved the race. 1967 F1 Champion Denny Hulme had a heart attack and died on lap 33 after his BMW drove down Con-Rod Straight only barely in control. Safety car periods prevented Skaife and Jim Richards from getting away until a storm swept across the circuit on lap 144. Several cars crashed in the suddenly downpour including Jim Richards who hit the wall at the Cutting before crashing into a wall of crashed cars below Forrests Elbow while attempting to limp to the pits. With so many crashed vehicles, the red flag was inevitable, but the crowd below refused to understand how a crashed car could win. The normally calm Richards, upset from the death of his friend Hulme as much as the treatment he was receiving, returned the crowds abuse. Johnson and Bowe claimed second ahead of Olofsson and Crompton, who as Nissan drivers also bore the crowds abuse. The consistent run of Tony Longhurst and Johnny Cecotto rewarded them with fourth, although if the race had continued a better result beckoned. Win Percy and Allan Grice won for Holden the race within the race amongst the four 1993 cars, taking fifth place, while another of the storm crashed cars, cousins Jason and Scott Bargwanna won the Toyota battle for Division 2 from team mates twin brothers Neal and Rick Bates, who were also involved in the same pile up that claimed their team mates and the race winners. |
