The field in Zolder presented itself moire or less identical to last year; there were a few more Opels, now in Evo form, with Eggenberger as new team; Audi had a second team (AZR) and an evo version as well, which was rewarded with 40 extra kilos. BMW and Mercedes had last years’ cars, but with a lot of attention to details, of course, and they only had to weigh 980 kg. But the most promising new entry was ABS; nine Mercedes and six BMWs had the anti-lock braking system on board, and only time and money prevented the rest of the field to have it. Besides this, a tire war was now taking place; Michelin had a few teams, Bridgestone exclusive for AMG, and we already had Yokohama, Pirelli and Dunlop.
Was race 1 more or less as expected, Cecotto having the best start with Ludwig all over him but unable to pass with Nissen third, race 2 provided more of a spectacle. At first, Ludwig was tempted to a jump start by Cecotto, bringing the man from Bonn 1 minute penalty so his win on the road resulted in 14th overall only. Then Nissen put pressure on teammate Cecotto who was leading, so the later had to take avoiding action and found himself fifth. Retirements of Nissen, Winkelhock and Cudini and overtaking of Kreutzpointner and Thiim brought the Venezuelan another win. Although Stuck had to go through the qualification race, he finished ninth in race 1 and in race 2 he sliced through the field to finish second, followed by Biela in another Audi. Opel had a difficult weekend once more; the same story as last year. Car too late, insufficient testing, tires did not match, 16th for Engstler in race 2 the only result, while Niedzwiedz was sent into the barriers in race 1 by Dutchman Euser in the Carly BMW.
