Only 2 tenths covered the first six on the grid, and first away was Cleland, followed by Soper and Hoy. A battle between Soper and Cleland ended on the outside of Campbell, enabling Hoy to slip through, while Cleland moved down to fifth. Soper attacked Hoy and they exchanged the lead a few times, while Bellm attacked Cleland in the chicane - and passed him with a breathtaking manoeuvre. Hahne sailed past Cleland too, and things started to look really bad for his championship hopes. You might think that the semi works team Prodrive team would help Hoy in the championship, but they did not; third placed Palmer made an optimistic move but hit Hoy, who spun and dropped back - behind Cleland! Hoy did not give up, attacked Cleland but damaged the front spoiler which now made contact with his left front tire. Harvey in the mean time went up to second past Palmer while Rouse joined the fight for sixth. In the Complex, Hoy who had passed Cleland drifted to the outside with the predictable result that the Vauxhall driver went to the inside. Another hit and both Cleland and Hoy fell back to 11th, amidst a cloud of smoke, sending of Gravett into the grass in the process. Hoy went into the pits and gave up, but Cleland lost ground too; he finished eight and while Harvey broke down in the last lap, it was Soper’s win ahead of Palmer and Hahne. All BMW, but the most important one did not finish.
