It had been a while since Mercedes had won a DTM race, and it was a relief that Ludwig came back to winning form at the Eifelrennen. Much testing had resulted in a front row with Ludwig and Thiim, and not a single works car had to start in the qualification race. In the words of Norbert Haug: “of the first six on the grid are five Mercedes from four teams with three tire brands in two practice sessions within one second”. In race 2 Cecotto retired with engine problems, leaving it to Winkelhock (who stormed to the front from 28th on the grid) and Nissen to break into the Mercedes ranks. For Audi, all that remained was sixth and seventh for Biela, after he received a foul from Nissen, while Stuck was hit by Heger, who in turn was hit by Schmickler. Both fouls were not punished this time. And Opel? S.o.s., with 18th for Engstler the high point. |
