18 cars for this first double-header round with Cleland and his new Dunlop radials on pole. He led after the start, but an error allowed Hoy and Soper to go through, while Ayles and Allam tangled so the Toyota had to call it a day. The other Toyota with Rouse was on great form (and had lots of top speed) and passed Cleland too, he was now third behind Hoy and Soper. Soon, Rouse sailed by Soper who let him go, and a little later Hoy had to give in as well when he missed a gear. Or was the problem bigger than that? He dropped back and retired, while the battle for third was now between Cleland and Palmer.
After 15 minutes for a quick service, it was time for race 2.
The start was for Rouse and he was followed by Cleland in his tail-happy Cavalier, Soper and the rest of the 15-car grid. In a spectacular move, Cleland got past Rouse and a little later Soper did the same. But Rouse played a waiting game, and when Soper got wide he slipped through. Moments later Cleland missed the apex too, and Rouse was in the lead again, while Cleland dropped to fifth. But it wasn’t over yet, Soper taking first again, then Rouse and Bellm in third, using the special Yokohamas destined for Hoy who was in the pits, pondering about missed gears and overrevved engines. Now Bellm dropped back unexpectedly, letting the Vauxhalls and Harvey through.
Then, as if this wasn’t enough, Whale lost his oil at McLeans, spun on it and he and Hales ended in the gravel trap while Baird only spun but could continue. Then the head of the field approached, oil flags waved but Rouse lost it but missing the two stationary cars unlike Allam: both he and Cleland slammed into Whales’ car, with Bellm bringing up the rear. Harvey spun too, and then Odor came round, getting through just between the Cavalier/BMW/Mitsubishi pile and Harvey. The race was redflagged, and efforts were made to get some cars going again. The race was restarted with Rouse, Soper, Palmer, Bellm, Harvey, Bristow, Middlehurst, Gravett, Odor and Baird while Hales and Forrest started from the pit lane.
Rouse took the lead again, followed by Soper, Harvey and Bellm. An attack of Harvey against Soper ended in tears, while Soper was passed by Bellm and Palmer - and Cleland was making up ground, with a smoking rear wheel. Action all over the place! Finally, on aggregate it was Rouse who won ahead of Bellm and Palmer.
