Protest after protest in Berlin; the powerful Audis dominated the races at the fast Avus track (1-2-3-4 in race 1, only Jelinski retired in race 2 so just a 1-2-3, team orders: Stuck and Biela a win each, Jelinski and Haupt each a podium) but the fights took place off the racing track. It started with an accident of Thiim in practice; he slammed into Cecotto, making clear that his ABS hadn’t worked properly, the uneven surface possibly fooling the system. Promptly, his car was disqualified for being dangerous, his time (good for 9th) disallowed; he had to start from the back of the grid with his spare car in the qualification race, which was impossible just 20 minutes before the race. After the race, the circus went on: Zakspeed protested against Cecotto (missed a chicane); rejected, Cecotto had no advantage. Zakspeed appealed, but withdrew later. AMG protested against Cecotto, since he hit Stuck in race 2; rejected, AMG was not in any way involved in the incident. The Mercedes of Lohr was confiscated for technical inspection, since she slammed into Thiim; the explanation that she braked just a little too late was not accepted - it must have been that ABS again. |
