Since Group A had left the Zandvoort track now (though a race for Youngtimers was held on Saturday on three occasions), the Group N field could be split in two since it grew considerably. A weight penalty system for race placings 1-2-3 was introduced, with a maximum of 100 kg for the biggest class - but you had to have many wins for that.

To the delight of Alfa Romeo they now had a race of their own; new cars for van Splunteren and Vörös, while last years’ car was driven by Wout van Reenen, who promptly delivered pole and finished fourth in the race, behind van Splunteren, Vörös and Kadett driver Bolderheij. New Suzuki man Ciapponi won his first race.

The Sierra’s still raced with a restrictor (36 mm now) and the minimum car weight was now set to 1330 kg (BMW M3, for Euser, Visser and Huisman and Langenberg in private cars), 1200 kg (Mercedes, for Hin and van Dedem) and 1220 kg (Sierra, for van Krimpen and Hemmes). BMW was furious, and entered a 1989 version (with a little less horsepower) for Euser; that car only had to weigh 1200 kg! The Barron team opted for qualifiers in the race, since rain threatened; a very local shower helped the versatile driver dealing with van Krimpen, after he had fought down both Hin and van Dedem.
A new face was Mike Hezemans, son of the legendary touring car ace Toine; he brought a Porsche 944 S2 but it was having a difficult debut here with tire problems all over.
