It was a near-perfect weekend for Bigazzi; the Italian team with no sponsor won twice with Soper and had a 1-2-3 in race 1. In that race, Stuck overcooked it in the first curve; he rammed Cecotto and van Ommen, with three retirements as consequence. The other BMW teams had better things to do; Giroix lost time behind the Stuck/Cecotto incident and on his way to the front he found BMW colleagues Nissen and Hahne not co-operative at all; finally, he pushed Nissen off and in return Nissen rammed Giroix’ car in the slow-down lap! Apart from this kind of irritation and another seven engine failures, it was a good weekend for BMW; with so many competitive cars, there was always one at the front. Quite unlike Mercedes; only the two AMG cars of Ludwig and Thiim were on speed, the weight penalties not helping, but the new car should: May 1st would be the date the Evo 2 would be allowed to race. Thiim, after a practice accident, had an accident in the closing stages of race 1 while Ludwig salvaged a fourth and a third. |
