A DTM invitation race, which had a strong political touch in the country where apartheid still existed. Pik Botha welcomed the German teams in person, stating that this was the beginning of opening the doors from South Africa to the western world. 25 cars of Mercedes, BMW, Opel, Ford and Toyota took the journey to Africa; Audi did not go, not because of politics but because they took part in motorsport over there anyway (with TransAm cars) and Audi Germany would not pay for this.

Bigazzi and Schnitzer were not there too, the first heading for New Zealand, the second to Macao. AMG entered no less than five cars, one extra for Asch, the Mercedes test car with the Mercedes tester, having ABS on board. A first for the DTM here.
Kurt Thiim would have had massive problems in Denmark racing here, so he did not turn up; apart from Ludwig, Asch and Juniors Wendlinger and Kreutzpointner new signing Lohr (sharing a car with Wendlinger) and Sarel van der Merwe were entered.
Mercedes were strong favourites with their big wings, so the front row was for Asch and Ludwig.

Race one was led by Ludwig with Kreutzpointner following as a shadow, until young Fritz blew his head gasket, a fact which would be repeated in race two. Now Asch was second, in front of van Ommen and the BMWs of Heger, Hahne and Engstler.

In race 2, Ludwig slid over the oil of Fritz K, robbing his car of its front spoiler; a third behind Asch and Hahne was all that remained.
