Audi could shed some weight, since the BMWs were on maximum compensation weight. But the fast track would benefit Porsche most, it was expected.
The Sierras had gained four seconds in testing at Zolder, but it still wouldn’t be enough to be competitive, while Vanierschot couldn’t use the 24 valve engine yet; in fact, he had to miss Chimay altogether since his engine expired while testing at Zolder. The same fate befell De Jamblinne, while Tillekaerts was absent because of injuries from Imola.
The Ferraris were present despite sponsorship problems; but one of them was too slow in practice, the other one ran midfield.
Porsche was dominant: the number 15 car won both heats, the first one for Van Dalen, the second one by Patrick Nève. In heat one, Bachelart was second ahead of Verellen, Slaus and Martin, followed by the surprising Sierra of Semoulin. The latter even climbed to third, but than his engine expired and he fell back. Verellen and Bachelart fought for second, and in the last lap Bachelart even left the track but still finished third, though “Davit” nearly took advantage of the Audi fight, only to end in the barriers, dropping from third to fifth.
In heat two, Bachelart had another demon start, but soon Nève took over and won while Bachelart soon retired with an oil leak. Verellen had to start from the pit lane and never recovered, so Slaus and Martin ended on the rostrum as second and third.
