All six Mercedes works drivers had the 2.5 190 at their disposal now, but their were seven entered here; the private Marko team had bought enough parts to build a 2.5 themselves, thanks to connections to the Board of Directors. The Mercedes sports director was far from pleased (”we don’t have enough parts for our own cars”) and after some quarrels van Ommen could drive his 2.5 here but then had to turn back to the 2.3
Mercedes had led the way in using 18” wheels, and now some BMW teams used them as well; but Ford could go no further than 17”, since wheel sizes could only be two inch bigger than the standard car, which had 15” wheels only.
Ludwig got pole, but was in serious pains which worsened the night before race day. He was brought to hospital, where a kidney operation took place. No qualification race here, so now Cecotto was the fastest of the starters, and he took the lead ahead of Ferté, replacement for Hahne and in good shape here. But soon Thiim passed both cars and took the lead, surely on his way to victory - but it wasn’t to be, since his gear lever broke and he had to give up. Ferté had passed Cecotto and now was leading, with Ravaglia, who had a battle with Niedzwiedz, in third. But the latter had to conserve tires, afraid that they might blow; for the very same reason the Snobeck team withdrew both cars for race 2. In the end, Niedzwiedz finished seventh, behind Ferté, Cecotto, Ravaglia, Reuter, Soper and Asch.
In race two, Ferté took the lead while Niedzwiedz had a demon start to third behind Cecotto. Thiim sliced through the field and was eleventh after lap 1. The next lap Ravaglia passed Niedzwiedz, and Ferté raced on to an unchallenged victory, ahead of Cecotto and Ravaglia, the same podium as race 1!
