Niedzwiedz thought a double victory here could be possible - a championship rather not, given Ravaglia’s normal fortune. Ford BMW, it didn’t matter who would be crowned - it had to be a BMW driver, of course, with both Soper and Giroix having an outside chance. But both ruined their chances by a miserable top-qualifying, Giroix spinning in the last corner, Soper at the Ostkurve. Since there were more drivers getting it wrong, they started as 12th and 14th. Ravaglia qualified 8th, while Niedzwiedz got pole. Fastest BMW was Danner, standing in for the suspended Heger, with second. Niedzwiedz took the lead in race 1, while Danner hampered with his tires and fell back. Biela and Brancatelli gave Niedzwiedz cover, and the trio had only Cecotto to fear, who finished third. The other championship contenders all had engine problems: Ravaglia had misfires over 9,000 rpm, Soper’s rev limiter sunk until it only revved 8,400 rpm and Giroix engine temperature rose to unhealthy heights. Despite this, Ravaglia could keep his position around 6-8, enough for the title. But then Soper overshot his breaking at the first chicane and was on his way to hit a white BMW with number 15: Ravaglia. In the last moment, Steve locked up his brakes and headed for the right. Ravaglia saw it coming and slowed to a standstill, just in time to see Soper fly by once again - his spin stopped right before the nose of number 15. When Soper reversed, Ravaglia continued in tenth, still enough for the title - and that was how he finished. His fourth major title in a row!
In race 2, Ravaglia was freed from any pressure, and joined the battle in front, even putting pressure on Niedzwiedz - but second was a fine effort indeed.

Wendlinger got a chance in the AMG team since his own car was destroyed by Klammer in a hillclimb. He qualified 11th, and in race two he was heading for the podium when his engine expired.
