Niedzwiedz again blasted off the line to lead through the opening laps with Brancatelli and Pirro in hot pursuit. Contact in the course of the opening lap delayed Brancatelli and had Pirro heading for the pits for body repairs and fresh tires. With Pirro out of contention, Brancatelli settled down to the task of catching Niedzwiedz, an objective he achieved when the leader slowed with a suspected punctured tyre. Once the initial surge of action died away, the two Sierras settled down for the run to the mid-race pit stops which would decide the outcome of the race. Soper was scheduled to take over from Niedzwiedz, but when Brancatelli appeared unannounced ahead of the German, Soper jumped in. Within yards of leaving the pits, he realised that the car was mortally wounded with an overheated engine, the alternator bracket had broken some time prior to the pit stop but Brancatelli was oblivious to the fact, leaving Soper with no alternative but to return to the pits and retirement. Dieudonné took over from Niedzwiedz and went on to the win despite losing a rear wheel. Ravaglia moved into Schnitzer's second car after Pirro's early problem to take second with van de Poele. Laffite and Vogt initially took third for Bigazzi before it was discovered that Laffite had exceeded the maximum allowable time in the car and was disqualified, handing third to team-mates Martin and Thatcher.
