The last time Steve Soper had raced at Thruxton was in 1984. Then, as a member of the TWR Rover team, he was the up-and-comer. He was still, at that stage, the reigning British champion and Rover needed him to give its flagging title defence a boost. A privateer was showing them up. The offender? One Andy Rouse. On that occasion, Soper triumphed. May 1988 and once again Rouse was in one corner and Soper, returning to the BTCC for the first time since, in the other. What wasn't new though was the result. Although they fought hard over the opening laps, Soper's better tyre choice paid off. Rouse had to cede his lead and pit as the Texaco Eggenberger runner cantered into the distance. Rouse at least had the consolation of fastest lap, and second overall but the "newcomer" had stolen his thunder. It was a race which exacted a heavy toll on tyres, Jerry Mahoney taking third, Mike O'Brien the first non-RS500 in fourth and Frank Sytner fifth, just holding off Mike Smith at the line. It was a race of fine drives, by Mike Newman, Graham Goode, Karl Jones, Robb Gravett and Dennis Leech to name but a few although all were to end their races in the background.
