Andy Rouse did little wrong at Thruxton on Monday en route to another Dunlop British Touring Car Championship win. Once he had put down the early charge of Karl Jones, the Kaliber Ford Sierra RS500 driver disappeared into the distance to extend his class A lead over Jerry Mahoney who had muscled his way into third spot at the end of a race in which he had battled past both Guy Edwards and Mike Newman. While Jones held on for a superb second place, and Mahoney and Newman finished in the next two spots, Tim Harvey produced a good drive into fifth with Mike O'Brien's Holden sixth, unable to stop the more powerful Fords from breezing by. In class B, Roland Ratzenberger gave Alan Minshaw's team its first win of the season with a fine drive. Chased home all the way by Godfrey Hall's BMW M3, Roland had a failed tyre gamble by Prodrive to thank for the ease of his win. The Mobil M3s of Frank Sytner and Mike Smith both led the class early on but grooved slicks in the rapidly drying conditions proved a wrong choice and the duo didn't feature after lap five. Classes C and D went the way of John Brindley and Phil Dowsett respectively, the latter reinforcing his championship challenge. (MN) |
