Spa is always the most important race of the year, usually attracting a host of optimists hoping to win the classic without the necessary prior testing the demanding race requires. For the regulars chasing the title the race was doubly important with its double points allocation. Both the Eggenberger and Schnitzer camps acknowledged that Spa would probably decide the outcome of the championship. Bigazzi also opted to stick with the same pair of cars, adding Otto Rensing to their regular driving quintet. Prodrive returned with a pair of cars with Christian Danner, Bernard Beguin, Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Jean-Louis Schlesser joining Joosen and Duez. Once again, the Sierras took over from the start, but struck trouble just into the second hour when Theys shunted heavily and Boutsen's car had an alternator fail. The third car survived, and led, but was pursued by a howling pack of M3s. The Schnitzer, Prodrive and Bigazzi cars were packed tightly behind and closed in relentlessly before taking the lead in the early hours of Sunday morning. Both Eggenberger and Schnitzer held their lead drivers back until the very last moment, trying to guess which of their cars would be the one to finish most strongly. After his cars struck problems early in the race Ruedi Eggenberger had no option but to put Soper into his third car with Schneider and Biela, and made his move just after midnight. At that point, Schnitzer’s Charley Lamm had both of his cars running strongly but opted to put Ravaglia in with Heger and Quester. It was a wise decision, as van de PoeIe shunted the other one shortly after, having lost his lights on the run through Eau Rouge. One by one, Schnitzer's M3 challengers dropped by the wayside, leaving the Heger/Quester/Ravaglia car to score a memorable victory that gave the Italian a valuable double helping of points. Soper’s car, however, ran into front suspension problems late on Sunday morning and he dropped back to fourth at the finish. With Soper having moved into the third Sierra, Dieudonné moved into the first car with Boutsen and Ludwig which, after its initial alternator problem, ran largely trouble-free to finish second giving Dieudonné a healthy boost in points to move him into contention. Spa had been the best race of the year; the battle for the lead raging through the night before the inevitable mechanical problems intervened to hand the race to the most reliable car.
