A dry/wet qualifying session leaves Miedecke on pole from Bowe, after rain costs Johnson a chance at beating the OXO driver's lap. However, Miedecke's pole is for naught, as the clutch gives up on the run to the first corner. From there, Johnson is never headed. Bond charges from a low grid spot before retiring. Bowe spins at the second hairpin early allowing Longhurst through to second, but he soon retakes the place. A thrilling dice between Jim Richards and Allan Moffat sees the BMW pass the Sierra in the twisty section, before the ANZ car blasts back past down the straight, repeating the sequence for several laps. Fury has an exciting ride when he arrives at turn one with a punctured tyre, while Longhurst retires from third on the last lap. Perkins puts a Commodore onto an ATCC podium for the first time since the Sandown round the previous year, behind the dominant Shell Sierras.
