The Salzburg round of the DTM wasn’t a race at all. Practice went fine, with a new entry from the Schnitzer team for Ravaglia, while Opel sent a works car for Haider.
Race 1 was redflagged after a single lap; the narrow track with its armco close to the tarmac took its toll when a bunch of cars arrived at the first hairpin. Cudini, Asch, Grohs, Manthey, Wollek, Stureson, Müller, König and Becker were involved one way or another.
Okay, that happens more often, so a second start took place, but in lap 2 it was Ketterer who was swiftly sent to the barriers by Dupré, where the car rolled and disintegrated. Ketterer sustained hardly any injuries mercifully.
Start number three: the drivers were heated and irritated, but for all of seven laps it went fine. Then, both Drexler, about to be lapped, and Hahne sustained a puncture. Drexler rammed into the armco, Hahne had a mighty 360 without touching anything - but that could not be said of Quester, who was close behind and totalled his car against the barriers.
More waiting, more discussions; race 1 was cancelled and race 2 would start as if nothing had happened. Ravaglia, “winner” of race 1, was on pole but was directed to the wrong side of the grid. Before more heated discussion could take place, the “3 minute” sign was given and we were in for more racing. Alas, it would be only a single lap before unfriendly nudges from Cecotto, Cudini and Reuter would result in yet more mayhem; Klammer, Müller Jr, Haider, Oestreich, Weiss and Stermitz were the victims.
Apart from Mercedes (tactical reasons) nobody else would like to continue; the race was cancelled.
