Andy Rouse may play it down, but his drive to victory in Friday's BTCC round at Oulton Park was one to savour. Having eclipsed pole position by several light years in his Kaliber Ford Cosworth RS500, the former champion gave a virtuoso display of how to safely and surely drive a highly powered, slick-shod car with ease in the wet. Leading from the start, Rouse gradually pulled away from his chasers, led by first round victor Jerry Mahoney, to finish well clear at the end of 17 laps. That was when the race was red flagged, a spectacular incident between the BMW M3s of Frank Sytner and Alan Minshaw ending the race. Neither man was hurt, although Minshaw's car somersaulted over the barriers at Cascades. Sytner was classified sixth, behind Rouse, Mike O'Brien (who drove a storming race from 15th on the grid in his Holden), Mahoney, Tim Harvey and Mike Newman respectively. Class D went the way of Phil Dowsett although Mark Hales pushed him hard earlier on. (MN) |
