There was no denying the strength of feeling between the Andy Rouse and Eggenberger camps at Donington on Sunday. A series of races, culminating in the now-infamous Tourist Trophy result, had left the two Ford teams with as much in common as chalk and cheese. Donington was to be the showdown - Eggenberger's last chance to put the upstart Englishman in his place, and Rouse's chance to put one over on the works team yet again. After practice the honours lay with Steve Soper, after the duo had jousted for pole position right until the chequered flag. It seemed to be going all his way in the race too, leading for the first nine laps. However, Rouse shadowed him all the way before slipping past and forging into an unassailable lead. For the third time in four meetings, Andy had the upper hand and there was nothing that the combined talents of Soper and Eggenberger could do about it. But there was more to the race than just that, Chris Hodgetts taking a startling third overall in his Sierra, having had the cheek to even consider taking the lead on lap one while Mike Newman and Guy Edwards had a controversial coming-together on lap 20 which dropped the latter to sixth place. Although Frank Sytner again won class B for BMW, Rouse's overall triumph takes the championship battle all the way to the line at Silverstone on October 2. (MN) |
