In the programme, the second round of the Dunlop British Touring Car Championship was a 12 lapper, insufficient to qualify it as a points race under the existing regulations. To save egg smearing any faces, it was increased - somewhat reluctantly - to 14, to comply with the distance requirements, the initial cause of dissatisfaction having been the sparse entry. A similarly-sized Thunder Sports field is OK for 40 laps of course, but the BTCC just isn't flavour of the month presently. A great shame, as if all those who do have eligible cars were to turn out, then there would be precious little cause for complaint. At Oulton, Tim Harvey was a deserving winner, his Istel Rover Vitesse never missing a beat. Harvey shadowed poleman Mike O'Brien's Holden Commodore for just a couple of laps, before the Australian machine went sick, leaving the Rover driver clear. Graham Goode's Sierra Cosworth eventually sprang into life to take second after a tardy start, while class wins went to Mark Hales (Escort RS Turbo), Roger Saunders (Renault 5 GT Turbo) and the inevitable Chris Hodgetts (Toyota Corolla).
