The base weight of the Sierra was indeed increased by 50 kg to 1300, which meant that championship leader Reuter now had 1395 kilos to move around the Norisring track, which hosted only the second DTM race in its history.
Reuter practised 12th and finished 17th after two pit stops. At front, the BMW’s were in control, though the Swedish Volvos were fast here on their new 17” wheels.
Grohs was on pole, Stureson second and Hessel third. But after the start, the German BMW junior was touched from behind and spun in the first hairpin. Grohs was in the lead, but after he braked a flat spot on his tires, the suspension collapsed and he was out. Manthey took over and won the race, ahead of Hessel who had made an impressive comeback. The Volvos finished 3-4, Mertes was fifth and the first Sierra, despite a slipping clutch. Winkelhock was unlucky as ever; he had to pit after a contact and finished 13th. Thiim’s Alfa Romeo found some speed, was sixth for a while until his fuel pump gave up - he finished tenth in the end.
