It was supposed to be a BMW track with its twisty nature; but after practice, things looked different. Two Fords on row 1, the best M3 (Manthey) fourth, Grohs and Van de Poele on row 7 and Hessel on row 10 - the BMW teams had reckoned the weather would be warmer.
Reuter took the lead and was never challenged, but poor Winkelhock (P2 on the grid) retired in lap 1 with yet another broken turbo. Manthey had a fine race, finishing second and clocked fastest lap (though other sources mention von Löwis of Menar).
Mertes finally ended his string of bad luck with third place in the race, after a fight with König and his new M3; a backmarker decided the outcome. It was considered that the Sierras should have another 50 kg added to their weight; though Reuter’s car already tipped the scales at 1345 kg including penalties after his recent good results.
