A nice dessert after the DTM season; a non-championship race to try the 1988 race format. Two heats, 15 minutes apart, 24 races for the season with 4 results to drop. Not used here, but in 1988 an air restrictor would be used to keep the cars more or less equal. The atmospheric engines would benefit from more freedom for valves and inlet and exhaust manifolds and channels.
From France Snobeck brought a Mercedes 190, which sported some of the 1988 modifications. The car was competitive, but it retired with a broken valve.
Hahne had been the fastest on the track, but retired in heat 1; so Van de Poele finally got his first DTM win - in a non-championship race...
