At first, it was Niedzwiedz who took the lead from pole, while Weidler was hindered by teammate Klammer - who himself got hit by Fritz Müller which resulted in a puncture. Niedzwiedz fell back with fuel pickup problems and now it was Thiim in the lead, relatively lonely since Weidler had to regain lost ground after the start, and he had a close battle with Goeser on top of it. The latter complained about the forceful driving of the Mercedes man, but Weidler returned the compliment: “Goeser, with his tinted glasses, is a fine chap, I had to pull out all the tricks but I couldn’t nerve him at all.” That was 1-2-3, in fourth it was Asch, replacing the injured Reuter in the Sierra. With Niedzwiedz only tenth and the other Sierras retiring, Asch was the best Ford driver.
