Thanks to their dominance in 1985, the Volvos were heavy this year - 1400 kg. Still, the cars were perfectly suited to the fast Hockenheim circuit; after lap two Andersson and Stureson were in the lead. Polesitter Thiim had a bad start and was rammed from behind by Reuter in the first chicane; he was out. Behind the Volvo pair, the fight for third was worthwhile between Niedzwiedz (Sierra), Oberndorfer (AMG Mercedes) and König (BMW 635). Oberndorfer and König had a coming together with disastrous results for the Mercedes driver, while Niedzwiedz took third despite low boost pressure. |
