If Thiim got three points more than Weidler, he would be champion. But practice saw them not in front; Thiim qualified tenth, Weidler seventh, and the front row should have been formed by two silver Mercedes cars: van Ommen got pole, but on his way to the pits his rear suspension broke, his car rolled and it was impossible (or dangerous) to get it sorted before the race. The other Scuderia Kassel car now started in front, with Oberndorfer behind the wheel. “Obi” took the lead, but when Winkelhock overcooked it and damaged his sump over the kerbs, and left a long oil trail on the brand new track. The pace car was sent out, and gone was the gap between Oberndorfer and his pursuers König and Niedzwiedz. But it was Goodyear-day here, Pirelli (Weidler) nor Dunlop (Thiim) didn’t suit the new tarmac. Oberndorfer just held the upper hand over König to the flag, while Reuter finished third. In the penultimate lap, it looked like the championship went to Thiim; Weidler had left the track after a coming together and had to change a tire in the pits, rejoining the race in 16th spot. Thiim was eleventh, and virtual champion, but the race was one lap too long; his front suspension collapsed and he was classified 14th, two places ahead of Weidler - which was not enough. Oberndorfer drunk his champagne, but after the race the car was disqualified: the exhaust manifold was 0,3 mm over the limit, an error of the team. König was proclaimed the winner, and everybody else moved one place up; but that didn’t change the championship position.
