The super fast AVUS track surely would have a turbo winner, or perhaps a Mustang? Niedzwiedz was on pole, but surprisingly enough Weidler was second on the grid. After the start, Niedzwiedz took the lead while teammate Grohs, having a very unlucky season indeed, retired with a broken turbo. But more Sierras ran into trouble: Mertes ran out of track in the chicane, and then Niedzwiedz broke down with a damaged spark plug. Only Reuter was now in contention, though it was Weidler who was just ahead of him now. But the retirements continued: Goeser lost a wheel, Klammer damaged an oil line at the chicane, Asch slaughtered another V8.
Reuter finally went by the Mercedes of Weidler, but then at the Nordkurve the rear of the Sierra went up, the car looked like rolling forward but went down again. The rear wheel and suspension had been torn off, perhaps the result of the 1400 kg the car had to weigh now.
Weidler went on to win, and his seat in the AMG Marko team seemed secure now. Andersson finished second on the road but was excluded since his car was 14 kg underweight. So it became a double Benz victory with Breuer second and the last remaining Sierra of Beate Nodes third; a first DTM podium for a lady, since both Stureson (puncture) and Thiim (differential) fell back in the closing stages.
