What a difference 12 months makes! Many more competitive cars rocked up for the first round of the ATCC than a year ago. Reigning champ Jim Richards had the pick of either his trusty 635CSi or the new 325i, eventually going with his championship-winning 6-series.
The HDT had their first race meeting of what will be a busy year, combining a full mostly-2-car ATCC campaign with their European adventures. Also aboard Commodores are former Celica campaigner Graeme Bailey and former motorcycle champion Graeme Crosby.
Finally, the Nissan Skyline was ready for debut at Amaroo with George Fury in charge. The sleek Skyline was instantly quick, and eye-opening 1.1 seconds under defending champion Jim Richards' 1985 lap record to keep Francevic in the Fetch Volvo off pole and more than a half second ahead of third fastest Richards. True to its qualifying speed, Fury had the Nissan hanging onto the lead for the first few laps, hotly pressed by a resolute Francevic in the old ex-works car which had been painted in the European colours for its Nissan/Mobil series appearance only weeks before and obviously benefriting from some early season race development. But once Francevic stormed by with the straight-line speed that was the Volvo's traditional strength, the Nissan faded, fell into the hands of Dick Johnson's Mustang and then Peter Brock's Commodore. The Nissan then faltered and headed for the pits. A blistered rear tyre was the problem. A new cover on, Fury was back out, then back in, the cause of the original problem being diagnosed as a failing rear hub bearing that overheated that corner of the new car, as it ground itself to death.
