Just before the race, the Volvo’s Getrag gearbox broke. The team had no spare, but since the box was a sort of Group A standard, they could lend (and modify) one from Dick Johnson, and right off the line it worked well, promoting Francevic from fourth to third, behind Richards and Brock - and ahead of good Samaritan Johnson, who had switched the ignition of by accident and had to make up for lost ground. Soon, he was behind the Volvo and quickly dispatched with it. Francevic was now a prey for the fearsome threesome of Slako (ex-Rouse Rover on his only competitive outing), Jones (Alfetta) and Crichton (second JPS BMW). The makeshift gearbox mountings gave way and all that Francevic could do is let the group past and hope for a finish, which he finally managed although he had to let Bond and Bartlett by as well. At front, Richards won with ease. |
