Since there were still discussions, protests and appeals for the Diepholz race, nobody knew exactly how many points Manthey had - and if he still had a chance on the title, perhaps with help of the green table. Peil had a slim chance too, but in the warmup he touched with John and tried to get his damaged car back to the pits - he crossed the track at the moment Dr. Gerold and his BMW 323 arrived. He tried in vain to spin the car, and t-boned the Volvo. Both cars were totalled, so Peil tried to borrow Kröber’s car - but to no avail. The angry Peil now hoped that Stureson would retire!
To be sure of the title, Stureson had to get no more than 4 points less than Manthey; then, even when the appeal held he was still champion.
But soon it became apparent that they would not win the race; the Sierras were too fast. And so Ludwig won with ease, and Reuter only lost second to Grohs when his tires deteriorated at the end of the race.
But the attention focussed on the fight between Manthey and Stureson. The latter let the Sierras, Andersson, Grohs and Manthey go, and then John went by too - but soon he retired. Now Manthey was fourth, Stureson seventh - enough for the title. But then reigning champ Strycek interfered; he attacked Stureson in lap 11. In a fast right hander, he slipped by but touched the Volvo: both spun, and 4, 5 cars went by. “Stureson P12” and “Slow” was signalled to Manthey, and with his tires on the edge he dropped back and let Vogt by. But with that he lost his theoretical chance of the championship, then Stureson drove like a man possessed: with a little help from Andersson, whose engine lost power, though he held a small group behind him. Stureson passed Burkhardt, Asch and Andersson - and claimed the title.
