At Calder, another win for Richards was overshadowed by some panel beating from his opponents. Brock had a new Commodore, and HDT built their first customer car for Masterton which appeared too. While Masterton soon faded, Brock was happy with his car, put it on pole and took an early lead. But then the rebuilt Volvo of Francevic closed, and in a move on the outside of Valvoline the cars touched, resulting in a damaged valve on the Commodore’s left rear - which put the Holden into a spin next time round. After a tire change, Brock moved on but the engine had been overheating during the stop and he was a retirement. Francevic meanwhile had gambled with his soft tires and paid the price; Richard and close follower Johnson neared, and Francevic resisted the pressure by outgunning them on the straights while easing through the curves. Richards wouldn’t have any of it and shoved the Volvo through the esses but the car did not spin and seemed not really impressed by what was happening. It did slow Richards down though, and Johnson was quick to respond and passed Richards. It was not over yet, since the Volvo now used a backmarker to block the Mustang, giving the Swedish car an even worse appearance than it already had after the coming together with Richards. A few laps later, Johnson used the very same technique to shove the Volvo through the esses, albeit a bit friendlier but with the same outcome: Richards took second again. Two laps later, the Volvo ran wide and Richards as well as Johnson finally got past, while the Volvo dropped down the charts to seventh at the end.
