After a dominating performance in last season's Trimoco British Saloon Car Championship, Steve Soper has had a lean spell at the wheel of his Rover Vitesse in European Touring Car competition this year. However, on Bank Holiday Monday at Thruxton he once more returned to his former ways, taking an entertaining victory over series pacesetter Andy Rouse. Rouse's lead from pole position lasted into the second half of the race when, as his tyres fell victim to Thruxton's abrasive surface, he was overhauled by the ever present Soper, Tony Pond brought his Rover Vitesse into third with Jean-Louis Schlesser, making his first appearance in the championship, completing a Rover 1-2-3-4. Only Dave Brodie's Colt Starion could live with the Rovers until he sadly retired while holding fourth. The BMWs of Frank Sytner and Vince Woodman were out of touch with the leading cars but enjoyed their own personal battle for fifth but the expected challenge from local man James Weaver did not materialise, his BMW suffering brake failure in practice and crashing heavily at the chicane. Championship leader, Richard Longman left the scene early with his Datapost RS1600i after an altercation with Paul Taft's Metro Turbo, although he still commands a healthy lead in the series. Robin Brundle led Class B contenders with his Computervision MG Metro Turbo until a sudden loss of power on the last lap allowed the Alfa GTV6s of Jon Dooley and Phil Dowsett to pip him on the line. Class C laurels fell to the VW Golf GTI of Alan Greenhalgh which ran an untroubled, and lonely, race ahead of the squabbling pack of RS 1600is belonging to Jock Robertson, Rob Hall, Alan Curnow and Barry Lee.
